Anchor Schroeder ASDO delivers highly robust and reliable round steel anchoring system

Anchor Schroeder ASDO provides very robust and reliable anchoring system made of round steel

As a matter of course, the construction system of the New Terneuzen Lock must be extremely strong and have a life span of one hundred years. One of the requirements is a corrosion reserve of 6 millimeters for all parts of the anchoring system. The German firm Anker Schroeder ASDO did the calculations and demonstrated that the entire system more than meets all the requirements and supplied hundreds of anchor rods ranging in length from 2 to more than 70 meters.

"At an early stage we were involved by contractor combination Sassevaart in the design of the New Lock Terneuzen," says Cor Janse, engineer at Bender International. Bender specializes in the supply of technical steel products for hydraulic, utility and mechanical engineering construction and is a partner of Anker Schroeder ASDO. Worldwide, many bridges, locks, quay walls, stadiums and other structures are equipped with the Anker Schroeder ASDO anchoring and bar system. "We have been cooperating with ASDO for forty years and are the exclusive representative mainly for the Netherlands. Together we have deployed our know-how and expertise for such projects as the IJmuiden Sea Lock and the Maas Delta Tunnel."

Finite Element Method

"Contractor combination Sassevaart engaged us for technical advice. Together we then looked at the best sizing of the laying anchors. In particular, the main challenge in the entire construction system for the New Lock Terneuzen was the corrosion requirements. The so-called corrosion reserve had to be at least 6 mm per side almost everywhere, to ensure the long service life. In practice, this means that you get a very robust system of thicker steel." This corrosion reserve applied not only to the bars, but also to all parts of the overall connection. "The fact that not both the bars and all other parts had to have that 6 mm corrosion reserve made it more complicated to design. There was a lot of calculation involved. Our strength is that we used the Finite Element Method (Final Element Analysis) to calculate the sizing of all elements with the expected rusting and thus demonstrated that even after rusting, the entire system still more than meets the strength requirements." A total of hundreds of ASDO bars with a total weight of 2,000 tons were sized, produced and delivered. The screw threads range from M42 to M175 mm. The people from Bender and ASDO were also closely involved in the installation of the entire anchoring system. Cor looks back on a pleasant cooperation with contractor combination Sassevaart. "Thanks to the good cooperation we were able to provide the client with a good solution that meets the required life span and quality of the New Lock Terneuzen."
