MicroAsphalt as a solution for asphalt maintenance

Cracks, fraying, stone loss, frost damage, rutting in asphalt. Signs that it is high time for maintenance. But how can you do this sustainably and cost-effectively? The answer is Micro Asphalt, also known as Emulsion Asphalt Concrete (EAB). Rogier van Diepen, senior commercial manager POSSEHL Spezialbau, explains what makes MicroAsfalt so attractive to road authorities and road builders.

"Not only do you extend the lifespan up to ten years, but it is also many times more sustainable than a new layer of asphalt," Rogier said. "Just looking at the composition and application, the CO2 emissions are many times lower than regular asphalt. This is because MicroAsphalt is prepared cold as opposed to regular asphalt. Because it is prepared on site, we produce virtually no residual waste. Moreover, we consciously choose to use HVO100 with our MicroAsfalt machine; this fuel emits up to 90% less CO2 during use."

Rideable again within 1 hour

Speaking of application, this is an efficient process. First, the markings are removed and the existing road surface is properly cleaned. Then a pre-profiling layer goes over the old asphalt layer. This basically preserves the existing asphalt layer. A tire roller is used to roll the first layer. Next comes the top layer and this is also rolled off. This is enough to make the asphalt last again up to ten years. "Incidentally, it is not only a great solution for renovating existing roads, but also as a temporary solution for damaged roads that need to be completely replaced in four or five years, for example. And what makes it extra attractive is that the road is passable again just one hour after the MicroAsphalt has been applied. So a road is not closed for several days or longer, which is very pleasant for traffic flow."

Safe and quiet

Additional advantages of MicroAsphalt are that it is low-noise (C road surface -2.5) and it is safe for traffic thanks to its skid resistance. "On many roads you still sometimes see cracks and cracking being repaired separately with the result that the road is a patchwork of repairs. This is not conducive to road safety, noise pollution and driving comfort."

Within budget

The durability, road safety and fast application method combine to make MicroAsphalt very attractive from a cost perspective. "Especially given the fact that the central government is switching to a new funding system for municipalities and provinces in 2026. Municipalities will face a huge financial challenge as a result. Looking at road maintenance, the application of MicroAsphalt can help stay within budget. This is also of interest to contractors with a framework agreement for road maintenance."
