At InfraTech 2025, GEBA, recently merged with Green Road Equipment, will present a first: the very first 7-ton electric tandem roller. Developed in an exclusive cooperation with Germany's largest roller manufacturer BOMAG. A compact and flexible roller that can be used just as easily for asphalting highways as traffic circles. But there is another first in the field of electric equipment.
For years we did our own development of electric equipment, then under the Green Road Equipment banner. Manufacturers held off until recently. But now we are seeing more and more rapprochement from OEMs. This has led to us having an exclusive partnership with BOMAG since last summer. Speaking is Gijs Verberk, CTO at GEBA. The family business recently merged with Green Road Equipment and is a global pioneer in the electrification of road construction machinery. From diesel engine powered to 100% emission-free and electric, with no CO2 emissions. Since 2020, GEBA has made over 70 machines completely emission-free. The cooperation with BOMAG results in a nice expansion of the existing emission-free machinery fleet. "We want to realize a completely emission-free equipment fleet. The cooperation with BOMAG allows us to develop machines even better and faster. We now supply all the machines needed for laying asphalt: small and large emission-free asphalt spreaders, rollers and bitumen spraying trucks. To this is now added the 7-ton emission-free tandem roller. It is a relatively compact and flexible machine that can be used for the construction of freeways and highways as well as traffic circles. A new feature of this roller is that it can also be ordered without an engine, i.e. with a bare chassis and empty engine compartment. No manufacturer does that so far. What often happens now is that a (new) diesel machine is delivered and then transformed into a fully electric one. BOMAG is the first manufacturer to abandon this method. That saves a lot of unnecessary consumption of equipment and personnel and is therefore also a lot more sustainable."
Machine electrification, E-build, is one of GEBA's three pillars. The other two are: rental and service & maintenance. GEBA has been known as the road construction equipment rental company for nearly 50 years. In addition to equipment, their professionals are also available for on-site training and advice. Within the service & maintenance pillar, GEBA is also fully engaged in innovation. "Building emission-free machines is one thing, maintaining them is two. Our service department is available 24/7. The difference with competitors is that when renting electric equipment, one of our professionals always helps with the start-up, gives tips on how to avoid unnecessary energy consumption, but also explains how to use and change the battery as efficiently as possible. To improve our service even further, we are in the process of setting up a national service team that includes mechanics from our customers. That way there is always someone with the necessary expertise on site quickly."
New is the development of a special GEBA app for service, maintenance and energy management of electrical equipment. A demo of this will be shown during InfraTech 2025. The app developed by GEBA itself supports working smarter and more efficiently with electric equipment, or energy management. "The app makes consumption transparent, how much emission you can save, when maintenance is needed, when to charge and how much power you need on a job. That makes it very useful for the operator who wants to know when and how much to charge, for those who need to plan the work, and for the business office that wants to know how much the emissions savings are."
