After a successful 2023, Ritchie Bros Benelux, the leading global seller of used construction machinery, vehicles and accessories, is gearing up for the first of six online auctions this year. Under the slogan "Start 2024 strong!" the Moerdijk site is filled with over two thousand items, neatly lined up by product category. Marc Janssen, Sales Manager Benelux, looks forward with anticipation to the auction days on Wednesday, February 28 and Thursday, February 29 and explains why it promises to be an interesting year.
The used equipment market has changed a lot in a year, concludes Ritchie Bros. Prices for used machines were at historically high levels a year back and have normalized more from Q2, but are still above average. "What prices will do over the course of this year is hard to predict," Janssen knows. "It is to be expected that they will fall some more, although that depends on many different factors. Furthermore, we see that supply is growing strongly. From a seller's market in recent years, there is now clearly a buyer's market. The buyer is on the move and has plenty of interesting machines to choose from."
The Benelux team has worked hard over the past few months to be able to present an offer as versatile as possible, both in terms of machine types and models or years of manufacture. So there is something of interest for everyone. The inventory list for the auction on Feb. 28 and 29 currently includes 100+ mini/midi-excavators, 50+ excavators, 50+ wheel loaders, 170+ attachments, 30+ rollers, 25+ telescopic handlers, 260+ (scissor) lifts, 120+ aggregates, 80+ trucks and also several cranes, articulated dumpers, bulldozers or graders.
Some highlights of the offerings include:
Last year, Ritchie Bros. Benelux sold more than 13,000 items from Moerdijk during six auctions. Except for the Live Xperience event in October, all auctions were only available online through the Timed Auction system, where it is possible to bid several days in advance via the website or app. A Priority Bid (highest bid) can also be set and interesting machines can be stored in a Watchlist. The forced switch in corona time from live to online auctions has brought the company even more success. By fully digitizing and automating the bidding process, futures auctions provide greater ease of use and appeal to a more international audience. For example, at the six Moerdijk auctions in 2023, Ritchie Bros. registered more than 12,000 bidders from 84 different countries.
According to Janssen, a nice challenge lies ahead. "Falling prices have clearly increased doubt in the market. On both the buyer and seller side, many are wondering whether they should act quickly or whether it would be better to wait a little longer. An important role of Ritchie Bros. is to advise clients on their sales strategy. We have up-to-date data regarding machine categories, price development in the market, supply plus demand worldwide or how sales channels compare. In addition to our auctions, for those who want more control in this day and age, Ritchie Bros. offers several reserved alternatives, such as the online marketplace Marketplace-E and supply website Mascus.
From a buyer's perspective, the unreserved auctions are the most interesting, since there are no minimum prices. However, the international character of the Timed Auctions results in more and thus higher bids, since a machine that is less popular in the Benelux is in demand elsewhere. Bidding for the forward auction on Wednesday, February 28 and Thursday, February 29 is possible from Friday (9 a.m.). Would you like to inspect and perhaps test drive a machine beforehand? Then visit our viewing days on Monday, February 26 or Tuesday, February 27 from 8:00 am to 4:00 pm. The coffee is ready and if you come during lunch time (11.00-14.00), we would like to invite you to visit the food truck.
